California Non-Point Source Workshop
Hydromodification as a Cause of Non Point Source Pollution
May 7, 2008, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM, San Diego Marriott Mission Valley
Cosponsored by: the US EPA Region 9; the California Coastal Commission; the California State and Regional Water Boards; California Stormwater Quality Association; UC Davis Extension, Center for Water and Land Use; and Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.
8-8:15 – Introductions and overview of the workshop - Timothy Lawrence, Ph.D.
Part I – Background and Key Concepts
The basic principles of fluvial geomorphology and hydrology and their importance for hydromodification will be covered to provide an increased understanding of the way water and sediment moves through a watershed, and why we need to consider these more closely for stream health.
8:15 – 8:45 – Water 101: The impacts of hydromodification. (pdf version)
This session will cover the importance of maintaining water and sediment balance/flow/hydrology, and the links between hydromodification and non-point source pollution. Examples of typical and worst-case scenarios will be reviewed. - Chris Bowles, Ph.D.
9:45 – 10:00 – Break
Part II – Tools
Assessment, planning, restoration and prevention – An introduction to tools and approaches for addressing non-point source pollution impacts of hydromodification.
10:00- 11:00 – Land Use Planning and Assessment
11:00 - 11:30 – Hydromodification Management Tools
Continuous simulation/ flow duration modeling (pdf version) – Jill Bicknell, P.E.
Emerging Technologies (pdf version) Chris Bowles, Ph.D.
Part III – Obstacles and Opportunities
11:30 -11:50 – Challenges of Meeting the Hydromodification Requirements - Facilitated discussion
11:50-12:00 – Final Comments, Future Events, and Adjourn
